Add the fact that no micro organisms have evolved which are capable of digesting such, one can only imagine in the longer term the adverse and costly impact these bags will have on future generations.
The public seem to be unaware that plastic bags are produced from polymers derived from petroleum. The amount of petroleum used to make a plastic bag would drive a car about 11 metres. Considering this, Australia’s use in 2007 of 3.9 billion lightweight single use bags, this is fairly significant – even more so if we were to account for international usage also.
